My research interests are considered military art of the era of Justinian in its various aspects. I use a wide range of sources, primarily the works of Procopius of Caesarea, John Malala, Marcellinus Comitus, as well as the writings of Zechariah Rhetor, the Easter chronicle, the works of Cassiodorus and Isidore of Sibyl. Also in the future I’d like to analyze the archeological data.
Currently, the era of the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great paid close attention, which, in my opinion, is not accidental. During his reign in the Byzantine Empire the trend of transition from the ancient model of the state to the medieval begin to develop. For my mind the same tendencies can be traced in the military art of the time. The Byzantine army, based on Roman traditions, is certainly influenced by the East. In the course of Justinian's policy of restoring the Empire, the army faces various enemies. In particular, these trends are trying to consider the Western explorers Heldon, Osaris, Luttwak. In domestic science, we must take into account the works of Shuvalov, Bannikov and Morozov.
The goal of my research is to identify the transformation of this institution and to determine the degree of flexibility of the Early Byzantine army against the Eastern influence. It is also necessary to pay attention to the development of fortification, which was experiencing a kind of rise at this time.
The generals of this era are also worth to note. A whole galaxy of talented military leaders: Belisarius, Narses, John Troglita and many others can be seen during the reign of Justinian. Their lives can be traced through Martindale's most important prosopographical reference book of late antiquity.
Thus, the proposed subject of my research covers many aspects that together will allow me to reconstruct the military art of the time and determine its significance in historical perspective for Byzantine history.
