In my research I consider the policy of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II. I chose this topic because I am interested in the Emperor's personality. My goal is to show the importance of Theodosius II in the history of Byzantium, because he still remains underestimated by historians.
The political activity of Theodosius II is a little-studied topic in historiography. The study of this problem can be of great interest in many respects, there are still no works in which it would be covered with possible completeness. The problems that the Emperor had to solve are significant in the modern world. Eastern Empire in V century AD represented a bureaucratic state, because has many similarities with some countries in our time.
Theodosius had outstanding abilities, and was endowed with definite spiritual advantages, however, he went down in history as spineless and mediocre ruler, all subject to close - his sister, his wife, and after 441, and almost to the death - Chrysaphius.
During the reign of Theodosius there was an important event-the creation of a systematic Code, which combines all the decrees of Constantine the Great to Theodosius II. From the Code, we can learn about the features of social and political relations that developed in the Late Roman Empire. These laws, compared with the evidence of Late Roman historians, allow not only to determine the structure of the management system, the rights and obligations of key officials in the late Roman state, but also to identify the features of its functioning as a whole, the degree of law enforcement practice effectiveness.
During the reign of Theodosius II, the Christian Church suffered from schisms. This was due primarily to the appointment of Nestorius to the see of Constantinople, who began a brutal persecution of heretics. He made powerful enemies who destroyed him. The ecclesiastical activity of the Emperor is described in the «Ecclesiastical history» of Sozomen. Socrates Scholasticus in his work tells about the Church affairs of Theodosius, and his political. Of great value to the researcher is the «Chronicle» of Marcellinus Comitatus. The historian describes the events that took place in the Eastern Empire, the author pays special attention to Church Affairs and incidents in Constantinople.
The Eastern Empire was exhausted by wars with Persia, but eventually it managed to make peace. Numerous raids of nomads also hit the economy and the state politics. In addition to fighting, Theodosius tried to apply skillful diplomacy.
The power of Christian love was manifested by Theodosius II, who was not accidentally glorified by the Church for his spiritual exploits, which had a beneficial effect on the state of the Empire.
