My research is based on a variety of written sources that are crucial in drawing conclusions. The main part of the written tradition includes the works of Byzantine historians and chroniclers: Procopius of Caesarea "War with the Goths", "Secret History"; Agathius of Miriney “On the reign of Justinian”, Zosima “New History”, “Chronicle” of Komit Marcellin, “Chronography” of John Malala.

It is important that I also used the works of the classical ancient tradition - Herodotus "History"; Xenophon "Domostroy"; Plato's Dialogues; Plutarch's "Comparative Biographies", historical works of Roman authors (Livy, Tacitus, Suetonius, Ammianus Marcellinus and others).

Also, to uncover the origins and specifics of early Byzantine hetaerism, the works were used: I. Bloch, “The History of Prostitution,” P. Dufour, O. Kiefer, “Sexual Life in Ancient Rome,” Hans Licht, “Sexual Life in Ancient Greece.” In their writings, these authors consider all aspects of the phenomenon of the oldest profession.

The main purpose of my scientific work is to reveal the important role of women in world history. It is counted traditionally, that history was written by men about men and for men. The experience collected by men is presented to us as a “universal history”. The relevance of the study is associated with the need to continue work on the issue of gender themes in the history of Early Byzantium,  based on Late Antiquity as an era of the gradual reconstruction of the foundations of an already strengthened civilization. The topic is also interesting as an opportunity to objectively reflect the historical development of the role of women in the social, political and spiritual life of Byzantium, to determine its place in the historical arena, because in Russian historical science the "women's" problems in Byzantine studies have not yet been developed.

The phenomenon of hetaerism originated in Classic period of Antiquity. Due to the continued existence of the Roman Empire, it, along with a number of other phenomena, safely passed  into a new era, having survived the Christianization of society. Hetaerism was a specifically antique phenomenon, which in the first centuries A.D. was already a phenomenon close to modern prostitution.

The Christian Church played an important role in the formation of new traditions.

Attitudes towards fornication and carnal desecration evolved throughout the Early Byzantine period quite clearly and definitely in the direction of deepening Christian strictness. Many Christian writers emphasized the inadmissibility of carnal fornication.

In the late antique period, we observe a radical change in the human consciousness and social sphere. Social structures  have been adapted to new conditions and ready for the transformation of Christian concepts.

At one of his public speeches, Jozef Bulatovich said that «history is silent about many stories». And I might add that history is silent about many women's stories. Let's hope that soon we will be able to find out new facts that will determine the deserved place of a woman in the historical arena.
