The subject of my research is the issue of the private life of people in Early Byzantine society. Of course, nowadays more and more attention is paid to this topic, in particular, family and marriage relations in Byzantine families.  It is worth noting that family in early Byzantium could become a stronghold of good and fidelity in a world full of anger, fear and injustice.

The source base consists mainly of written sources (both normative and narrative), including: Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian, the teachings of the Church Fathers (for example John Chrysostom), patericonas and etc.

Talking about the financial status of the family, it is important to pay attention that most of the property belonged to man, mostly due to the fact that wife came to the husband's family. However, her duty at marriage was to bring a good dowry to the husband’s family, which should not exceed the condition of the husband’s family, for shame would then fall on their heads.

Turning to interpersonal relations, relations between spouses, it is important to notice that the husband must be hardworking, strong, courageous to ensure the well-being of the family.  The woman’s task is to preserve the hearth, maintain comfort in the home, raise children and take care of her husband.  In this case, the wife must be gentle and chaste, so that the man can find peace with her.

Also, as a result of Christianization, a woman can not only be the keeper of the hearth, but also engage, as we would now call it, in some kind of hobby: to learn something new, to allocate funds for the construction of churches or hospitals.  Here, of course, one must also take into account the social role - only "noble and wealthy women" could afford such "hobbies".

Despite Christianization, the main task of the woman remained caring and raising children.

Thus, we see that the Romance family is a full-fledged social institution, the basic and fundamental unit of society, which, in fact, was a secular configuration of the church in which each member of the family could find peace and tranquility.
